Of human feelings
Ornette Coleman

(Cover painting por Susan Bernstein)

At the end of the fifties, another new wave arose. This time the music was truly radical, not just seemingly so. Ornette Coleman (b. 1930) instinctively broke with the Western tonal tradition that had hitherto ruled jazz, and John Coltrane (1926-1967), a saxophonist who had come to the fore through his work with Miles Davis, broke with tonality in stages, through a process of deliberate searching for new modes of expression.

As had been the case since the arrival of bop (or to a more limited extent, since the placing of the holy grail in New Orleans), critics and journalists played a role in the development of the music first labeled “avant-garde”, then “the new thing”, and lastly and more fittingly, “free jazz”.

Coleman was the first to hit upon this apt title and recorded an album with that name, but when a concert by his group was thus advertised in Cleveland, many of the people who turned up refused to pay for tickets, and the promoter had to cancel the event.

Por acaso sabe assobiar?

"You know you don't have to act with me, Steve.
You don't have to say anything, and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing.
Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve?
You just put your lips together and... blow."
