As it turned out, Benny [Goodman] was scheduled to play at the same festival on a different night. Somehow he learned I'd [Milt Hinton] be out there and he called me. "I hear we're going to be playing at Concord next month," he said. "Listen, I'd like it if you would play for me."
"Sure, Benny," I told him. “What's it like?"
"How’s one fifty?" he answered.
I was speechless for a couple of seconds. I was going out there for a thousand and transportation, and he was offering me one fifty.
"Oh, Benny, for goodness' sake!".
"Well, look, I want you to be happy. What do you want?"
I thought for a moment, "Five hundred".
He hung up.
