Roaming through the jungle of "Ohs" and "Ahs" searching for a more agreeable noise, I live a life of primitivity with the mind of a child and an unquenchable thirst for sharps and flats.

Clips de letras # 6

Leroy Jenkins

I want to roam the boundaries of universal music with impunity. I want the weight of music’s history, the freshness of tomorrow’s expectations. I want freedom of where I’m coming from and where I’m going. I want each piece to be different, but maintaining my style. I want a swing that pulsates rather than beats. I want space to provide rhythmyc momentum. I want improvisation without musical notation, as well as the mysteries of the notated page. I want the brutal beauty of our times reflected in my music.

Of course my version of freedom has boundaries too. Don’t want to go too far out, might lose myself.

I would like to see my music on the world scene, as a rendition of the American scene, both Black and White, and all the other various colours.
(in Fink, Larry; Somewhere there’s music)

The blues comes right back to a person's feelings, to his daily activities in life. But rich people don't know nothing about the blues, please believe me.

Feito o inventário final, verificou-se não terem ocorrido imparidades e questões de justo valor.
A não ser... Hummm... Onde é que teriam ido parar as 2 garrafas de jeropiga?

Ingrid Jensen
(Foto: Angela Jimenez)

My mother was a classically trained pianist. She provided me with a highly creative environment, and music was the center of all we had. To her, music was something anybody could go to at anytime of the day. The piano kept her sane while raising three kids on her own without much support and holding down a teaching job. This was a very important lesson for me.

Despite her initial image I didn’t see any pictures of women playing jazz until I was in my teens. But it wasn’t that big of a deal, thanks to the highly supportive artistic environment I grew up in.

Later on, I remember Diana Krall playing with Ray Brown in Nanaimo while I was in junior high. It was her strong command of both the music and her instrument that gave me the thought, “hey, I can do that,” as well as her actual encouragement. She was a professional, not even singing at the time.
