Foto de Thelonious Monk por William P. Gottlieb

Monk trusted Hall [Overton] because Hall knew exactly what to do. He knew what to leave out and what to put in. And you got to know that with Monk. I mean, you can't just – you know, it's not vanilla. In other words, it ain't like usual. It's got to be what Monk did. And the band, that tentet, was like a piano. You had to write it like a piano. So you'd be playing all kind of parts. They intertwine and go up and down. Each instrument was like a key on the piano. Monk must have been pleased with Town Hall or else he wouldn't have wanted to work with Hall again on Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.

Hall would be playing piano for the rehearsal, and Monk would be in the other room dancing around in the way he did. Hall would ask him, 'When are you going to play?' Monk would say, 'When the tempo gets right.'

(1901-1967)

He is a boy from my hometown, you know, and we have known each other for years. Been the best of friends and, you know, he is a fine clarinet man and I just want you to know that I am all for him. Edmond played with us so many years, may the Lord bless him, you know.

Jazz People
Valerie Wilmer

Olhares muito pessoais acerca de pouco mais de uma dúzia de nomes do jazz. As letras e as fotografias pertencem ambas a Val Wilmer.

Frank Gant
Baterista de jazz

I must have been 13 or 14... I [had] bought drumsticks, but I had no idea what drummers would do. So I went home and started beating around the chairs and tables and listening to the radio. But it was hard: you could hear the drummers, but to actually pick up on what they were doing was impossible.

So by that time I became a fan of the Paradise Theatre, where the big bands were comin in, you know. So I’d go down there on Sunday. I might get there about 12 o’clock and stay all day, just to sit and watch and listen. And I caught all the big bands... Duke, Count, Billy Eckstine... he [Eckstine] had all the stars in the band... Charlie Parker... Diz, and Miles... but I was watching the drummer... Art Blakey. So I went backstage and said: “I’d like to talk to the drummer” and the stage manager said: “Art, somebody wanna see you!” He came over to the door said: “Hey kid, how’re you doin’? Come on in!” He took me in, just like I was a regular, you know... Buhaina [Blakey], I hung out with him the rest of the day, took me to his hotel, you know... that’s the way Art was, he was very positive about young guys getting into it.

Made me feel very good you know, so I decided to study drums... I just had a set of sticks, not even one drum.
