When I was coming up with Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Carla Bley, Steve Lacy and so forth in the sixties, while the revolution was fermenting, we were labeled avant-garde by a lot of critics. But we were also labeled 'shit, fuck, piss, noise, hate, bullshit, nonsense, yucky, poo, doo-doo…' and everything else bad you could say about anything ...
